A beautiful and highly collectible piece of authentic Early American Pattern Glass, produced by the John B. Higbee Glass Company of Bridgeville, Pennsylvania.
This clear pressed-glass vessel features Higbee’s Delta pattern, also known by collectors as Paneled Thistle or Canadian Thistle. The pattern was introduced in 1911 and is distinguished by its brilliant geometric cutting-style details, floral medallions, deeply paneled lower body, angular handles, and dramatic sawtooth crown rim. The John B. Higbee Glass Company operated from 1907 until 1918.
The most exciting detail is the tiny embossed HIG bee trademark located inside the bottom of the bowl. Look closely and you can see the letters H, I and G incorporated into the bee’s wings and body. This whimsical bee was the identifying trademark used by the J.B. Higbee Glass Company and is especially desirable among Higbee and EAPG collectors.
This piece appears to be an open sugar bowl, originally part of a Victorian or Edwardian-era table set. The EAPG pattern reference documents sugar bowls in the Delta line, including examples found without their original lids. It could also be beautifully repurposed as a small candy bowl, spoon holder, trinket dish, flower vessel or display piece.
Design details
The upper portion is covered in an intricate repeating band of:
- Pressed floral or thistle-like medallions
- Faceted diamonds and geometric star shapes
- Brilliant cut-glass-style detailing
- A tall sawtooth or crown-shaped rim
The lower body is surrounded by elongated vertical panels that catch and reflect the light beautifully. Two substantial angular handles extend from either side, giving the bowl a balanced and architectural silhouette.
The glass is heavy, clear and wonderfully reflective. Although molded rather than hand-cut, the deeply pressed pattern produces the sparkling appearance associated with fine turn-of-the-century brilliant glass.
